The project aims to develop an innovative engineered basement designed to protect medium-scale rigid structures—such as artworks or sensitive equipment—located in strategic public and private buildings. The objective is to create a "meta-basement" that harnesses the various phenomena arising from its nonlinear dynamic behavior to absorb mechanical vibrations generated by seismic events or human activity. Practically, the approach builds upon existing techniques such as vibration isolation, nonlinear tuned mass dampers, and local resonators, in order to develop a smart and advanced solution for vibration mitigation.
